Transition to Kindergarten
Rationale
Students entering Kindergarten at Hinton Public School will have a number of opportunities to visit the school and be involved in Orientation programs. Parents will also have access to the Principal and teachers before commencing Kindergarten. The school will actively campaign to attract students to the school.
Transition to School Actions
- During Term 2 the Assistant Principal will visit the local pre-schools to drop off pamphlets giving a brief overview of the school and its advantages.
- During Term 3 the Assistant Principal visits the local pre-schools and meets with the pre-school teacher to identify possible or probable students for enrolment. Potential students with any learning difficulties, disabilities, behaviour difficulties or gifts are also discussed and identified.
- Enrolment for Kindergarten is opened and advertised on school notice board and in school newsletter. Names and addresses of students are recorded at the office so that communication can be established.
- Opportunities for meetings with the class teacher will be arranged if requested by parents who may be “shopping” for a school or who would like to learn more about the Kindergarten program.
- During Term 3 an “Open Afternoon” for potential Kindergarten students is conducted. All students and parents are invited to attend by postal invitation. At this open afternoon, students visit the classroom and play while the Principal and Kindergarten teacher visit and talk with parents to answer any questions.
- Learning Support Team meetings are conducted for those students with special needs and a specialised transition program is developed to meet their specific needs and Funding Support applications are completed.
- In Term 4, Kindergarten Orientation sessions are conducted. At least 2 sessions will be conducted for all students and any students identified as needing additional transition support will have a program developed to meet their needs.
- After Orientation, the Learning Support Team will meet to discuss any students not previously identified as special needs. Parents of the student will be asked to attend the meeting.
- During the Orientation session parents will receive a folder containing the School Information booklet as well as a variety of other written material to support the beginning school process.
- Kindergarten students will be allocated a buddy to support them at school for the first few weeks of the new school year. The buddy and the student will have their photo taken at the last Orientation session. This will be posted to Kindergarten students to help them remember their buddy till the following year.
Evaluation of the Transition Program
Elements of Evaluation Process
- Parents involved in the Transition program will be asked to complete an evaluation sheet at the conclusion of the Orientation sessions. This will provide the school with written feedback on potential improvements and guidance on the aspects that are working well.
- Disability consultants and Integration Support Personnel will be asked to provide feedback to the school though meetings with the Principal and the learning Support Team.
- Kindergarten Buddies will be asked to complete a small survey and provide suggestions for improving the program the next year.
- The school will review its practices in line with DET values statements and with its own Purpose Statement. A monitoring of student enrolment over the next 3 years will also provide data for improving and reviewing the transition to school program.
