Parent Helpers Roles and Responsibilities

Hinton Public School encourages parents who are available, to assist with various programs within the school. There are many tasks including academic, music, sport, art, craft and of course assisting with school grounds and other activities.

All visitors on the grounds after 9.40am and prior to 3.20pm must sign on as a visitor at the Office.

It is important to know that as a parent helper, you may be dealing with groups and individuals who have varying abilities and different confidence levels.

If you work in the classroom please:-

  1. Ensure you have signed and completed a child protection form

  2. Follow teacher’s directions

  3. If doing an oral reading activity never have more than 2 children – one is best

  4. If supervising an activity indoors, be familiar with the content and assist as advised by the teacher – a small group of 3-6 is best

  5. Never make judgemental comments

  6. Remain positive and encourage each student

  7. Pupil’s performance is a personal matter, therefore do not compare performances

  8. Restrict any discussion of your activity and group to the teacher concerned. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES do you discuss pupil performances outside the classroom

  9. If children do not cooperate please refer the matter to the class teacher

  10. Be clear in your task prior to commencement

  11. Ensure you stick to the time periods allocated – if you need to discuss something with the teacher, make a separate appointment

  12. If required, fill in the comments book provided

At all times you need to be firm, consistent and confidential.

Do not hesitate to ask for help if confused and at no time should you tolerate bad or disruptive behaviour.

Your help is greatly appreciated by the teachers and students and any time you donate is considered of great benefit to all.
